Monterrico Natural Reserve

Originally a small fishing village, Monterrico is a relatively undiscovered town, which is now a nature reserve attracting many weekenders from the capital, and tourists visiting Guatemala. Eco-tourism and beach activities are the main attractions. Monterrico provides the perfect beach vacation in Guatemala with its palm trees, coconut and laid back atmosphere.
This natural reserve of more than 2,800 hectares is one of the most popular destinations on the coast of Guatemala. Within the reserve, you have access to beaches, boat tours, bird watching and an educational center. This gorgeous reserve is mainly composed of lakes, canals, mangroves, and saltwater marshes. As you can imagine, this well preserved eco-system is home to hundreds of different species. Not only can you spot more than 100 bird species, but also iguanas, caimans, opossums, armadillos, and squirrels. The mangrove trees and the tropical forest are yet other beautiful sights.
